Historic Spanish Ships in St. Augustine – Full-sized replicas of 16th century Spanish ships are open for tours at the St. Augustine Municipal Marina. The Nao Victoria is a replica of the first ship to sail around the world. In 1522, it was the only member of Ferdinand Magellan’s five-ship fleet to complete the first circumnavigation of the globe. El Galeón, the larger of the two ships is an exact replica of the famous galleons that played such an important role in the creation and maintenance of the Spanish Empire. It is similar to the galleon that brought Pedro Menendez to Florida where he founded St. Augustine in 1565. The Nao Victoria will be in port through February 8. Through July 15, El Galeón will be docked at the marina. The ships are available for tours beginning at 10 a.m. daily. Admission to the Nao Victoria is $10 for adults; $5 for youth. “Creatures of the Night Series” at Faver-Dykes State Park – From 5 – 6 p.m., Faver-Dykes State Park hosts a Luna Moth Program as part of their “Creatures of the Night Series.” The program starts with a half-mile informative hike through luna moth habitat. Participants design their own luna moth mask to take home. Meet at the campfire circle between sites 14 and 16 in the campground. Photography Challenge Event – Photographers, from beginners to professionals, compete to take the best photo at three designated locations within Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. Maps to the featured locations can be obtained from the Ranger Station or from volunteers in the main parking lot. Each month, park volunteers will select the winning photo which will then be displayed at the VIC kiosk and the park’s gift shop. There is no cost to compete. Torchlight Tours at Fort Matanzas National Monument – Spanish re-enactors conduct spectacular nighttime firings of two six-pounder reproduction cannons. Discover First America Program – Let Freedom Ring! – This program is brought to the St. Augustine community on the eve of the opening of the 450th Commemoration signature exhibition titled Journey: 450 Years of the African-American Experience. Persons who witnessed and experienced the landmark events that occurred in St. Augustine during the 1960s present rememberances. Also, Florida Memorial College alumni recount their important role in the Civil Rights Movement. The evening concludes with a gospel choir performance.
