Nov 9 Emma Concert Series – New Directions Veterans Choir with Director George Hill The New Directions Veterans Choir is an award winning a cappella group comprised of men and women who have served proudly in the United States Military. Another element they have in common: following their service to our country, they became homeless. The New Directions facility gave them new hope and direction. The choir recently performed on NBC’s America’s Got Talent and has been featured on the NBC Nightly News and E! Nov 10 Hansel & Gretel: A Fairy Tale Opera
First Coast Opera presents this piece by 19th-century composer Engelbert Humperdinck. The idea for the opera was proposed to Humperdinck by his sister, who approached him about writing music for songs that she had written for her children for Christmas based on “Hansel and Gretel”. Nov 16 Tolomato Cemetery Tour
This is the oldest extant planned cemetery in the State of Florida, with burials starting during the First Spanish Period. This historic cemetery has more than 1,000 burials (the last in 1884) and is one of the most significant cultural sites of St. Augustine. Nov 23 Colonial Autumn in Spanish Florida
Fort Mose Historic State Park will sponsor this wonderful event that will depict Fall harvest time. The families living at Fort Mose grew vegetables (pumpkins, squash, gourdes, beans, lentils, corn). They planted fruit trees like sweet and sour oranges, lemons, figs, and persimmons. Florida Living History’s Los Companeros de la Cocina demonstrates in the chosa how some of these local products were prepared and cooked in 18th century Spanish Florida. At 11am (and 1 pm), Annie Francis, independent scholar, will present her research findings from original sources in the Archives of the Indies on foods commonly consumed in Colonial Spanish Florida along with original recipes. She will take visitors on a walking tour through the farmers market and the chosa, giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about these traditional products and their preparations.
