The African Market at Fort Mose  –  The African American Future Society Inc, creates an African Village experience at Fort Mose, the first free African settlement in North America. Activities, include storytelling, dancers and drummers, take place from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. each day (outdoor musical performances 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) and will feature programs and exhibits about the languages, styles, traditions, food, art and music of West Africa. Bruce Minney Collages – The St. Augustine Art Association will showcase a solo exhibition of works by the late Bruce Minney in the Marguerita Phillips Permanent Collection Gallery. Minney was an established commercial artist whose illustrations were featured in countless men’s adventure magazines and paperbacks. He experimented with collages, paintings, ceramics, mixed media and mobiles. Hotel Ponce de Leon 125th Anniversary Community Lecture – Professor Lucian Gassett presents a lecture titled “American Artistic Printing & Design Inspiration at the Turn of the Century.” The presentation is part of the commemorative events celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the opening of Henry Flagler’s Ponce de Leon Hotel and takes place at 10 a.m. in the Flagler Room at the former Hotel Ponce De Leon, now Flagler College. Tickets are $5 per person for a single lecture or $15 for four lectures in the series. Active military personnel may attend at no charge. The Abolitionists – “The Abolitionists”, from the National Endowment for the Humanities African-American Experience Film Series, will be shown in the Gamache-Koger Theatre, Ringhaver Student Center at Flagler College. The showing of this film is part of the series Race and the South: St. Augustine in Context, presented by the Flagler College Ideas and Images program marking the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act. El Pescado Billfish Tournament – The Monique Burr Foundation, a non-profit advocate for abused children, will host the 25th El Pescado Billfish Tournament at Camachee Cove Yacht Harbor. Corn Maze at Skyes and Cooper Farms – A 9-acre corn maze full of “cornfusing” twists and turns, “live” entertainment including Jack, the loudest hee-hawing donkey around and some more good ole family fun will be at the Sykes and Cooper Farms. Photography Challenge Event – Photographers, from beginners to professionals, compete to take the best photo at three designated locations within Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. Maps to the featured locations can be obtained from the Ranger Station or from volunteers in the main parking lot. Each month, park volunteers will select the winning photo which will then be displayed at the VIC kiosk and the park’s gift shop. There is no cost to compete.
